Use either tool to find sources, but open the original material before relying on an important claim.
What each product documents
Perplexity’s help page describes Pro Search as an advanced search workflow for more involved questions and says its answers include direct links to original sources. Its getting-started guidance also explains that citations are clickable so the reader can inspect the underlying page. This is useful for discovery, but a citation is not proof that the linked page supports every sentence in a generated answer.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search help page says search responses may include citations and a Sources view. OpenAI specifically cautions that results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect and recommends opening the cited source, checking its date, and using an authoritative source where accuracy matters. For a substantially longer investigation, ChatGPT Deep Research is a separate workflow: its help page describes a proposed plan the user can review and a structured report with citations or source links.

A reproducible research check
- Write the research question, date range, region, and what decision the answer supports.
- Use the same prompt and source constraints, and record whether you used ordinary search, Pro Search, or Deep Research.
- Pick three high-impact claims; open each source and record whether it directly supports, partly supports, contradicts, or fails to address the claim.
- Check whether a citation points to the original document or only repeats another summary. Search for a primary source where possible.
- Ask what important evidence is missing and whether the answer changes when you narrow the date, region, or source boundary.
- Choose the interface that makes your source review and follow-up work easier. Do not substitute citation counts or polished prose for evidence quality.
Limits, audience, and assessment
Best fit: writers, analysts, and students who want a faster route to discover sources and are prepared to inspect them. Not a fit: users who need a guaranteed complete search, audit-grade evidence timestamp, or an answer that can be published without review. Both vendors warn in their documentation that citations or search results can still need checking. The site does not claim an independent accuracy benchmark for either product.
Our provisional editorial view is that Perplexity can be a useful first stop when source discovery is the bottleneck; ChatGPT can be convenient when search is one part of a longer task. That difference is an inference from the documented product workflows, not evidence that one service is generally more accurate. For a short factual question, direct search of the original institution may be faster and more reliable than either assistant.
