AI video models can help a team explore scenes and create short clips, but an episode is still an editorial project: the script must be divided into shots, characters and props need continuity, generated audio needs review, and every usable take must be costed and cleared. This guide gives a vendor-neutral process for planning an AI short drama without assuming that one model can generate a finished episode in a single prompt.
1. Break the script into producible beats
Start with a one-page brief: episode objective, audience, format, target runtime, language, style, and the final delivery platform. Divide the script into scene beats, then into individual shots with one main action each. For every shot, record location, characters, wardrobe, props, camera direction, emotion, dialogue, sound, aspect ratio, and how it must connect to the previous and next shot. Short generation durations make this planning important; avoid asking a model to solve several scene changes and character actions at once.
Build a character and setting bible before generation. Include approved reference images, stable visual descriptions, costume details, prop continuity, voice direction, and any material the team must not change. Make a storyboard or shot list with a clear start and end state for each shot. References can guide a model, but no provider’s documentation is evidence that identity, costume, or geography will remain perfect across a finished episode.
2. Pick candidates by the production constraint
Choose two or three candidates for a small evaluation rather than relying on a general “best model” label. Official sources currently position Vidu Q3 Drama for comic-drama workflows; Kuaishou describes Kling 4.0 with multi-keyframe and reference controls; MiniMax describes H3 as accepting multimodal context and generating native audio-video; and PixVerse positions C1 for film and drama shot development. These are vendor claims. The exact model, interface, API access, region, and plan can differ, so verify them in the account you will use. Our Chinese AI video generator shortlist summarizes the documented options, while the Vidu, Kling AI, Hailuo AI, and PixVerse pages provide tool-specific context.
| Need to investigate | Candidate to inspect first | What the documentation does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Comic-drama or dialogue-led reference shots | Vidu Q3 Drama | Episode-wide continuity, natural acting, or consistent dialogue across shots. |
| Longer single shots and story-beat control | Kling 4.0 | That all accounts have the model/API or that 30 seconds is an approved final take. |
| Multiple modalities and generated sound | MiniMax H3 through the intended Hailuo/API route | That web, API, and open-weight versions share access, limits, licensing, or quality. |
| Film-oriented reference and post-production material | PixVerse C1 | That the model will eliminate editing or deliver a finished episode. |
Use the shortlist as a hypothesis generator, not a benchmark. The next step is to compare candidates on the same scene and accepted-output criteria.
3. Run a small, fair shot test
- Choose one representative scene with a face, a recognizable costume or prop, a camera move, and a short line of dialogue.
- Use the same script excerpt, references, aspect ratio, and visual instructions wherever each model supports them.
- Generate a small number of takes. Record model/variant, settings, credits, duration, resolution, and every failed or discarded attempt.
- Review the outputs against a checklist: face and costume, prop continuity, screen direction, camera movement, physical motion, dialogue pronunciation, lip movement, audio mix, text artifacts, and transition suitability.
- Count the takes that meet the brief and estimate edit time. Compare cost per approved shot, not the advertised cost or the most impressive sample.
Do not describe this process as independent product testing unless it has actually been completed and documented. We have not conducted the comparison described here; this is a reproducible evaluation plan.
4. Assemble the episode and review the result
Generate shots in script order, but approve them in context. A clip that looks attractive alone may break eye-line, spatial continuity, emotion, or pace when placed beside the previous scene. Have an editor check shot order, dialogue timing, captions, sound transitions, color, and repeated visual details. Expect to use a separate editing tool for assembly and finishing; a generator’s “workflow” feature should not be assumed to replace the complete post-production pipeline.
Before release, confirm the current terms for each model and platform, the rights to input images, music, likenesses, and voices, and any required AI-content disclosures. Check account country, payment route, and output rules for the actual service used. The official product pages explain model features, but they do not settle every jurisdiction’s legal questions or grant rights to source material. For commercial projects, use our commercial AI video selection guide and involve the appropriate rights reviewer.
Who this workflow is for—and its limits
Best fit: creators, small studios, and social-video teams that can storyboard, inspect outputs, edit clips, and review rights before publication. Key limitation: this is not a shortcut for teams that need guaranteed actor continuity, exact lip-sync, broadcast-ready audio, or a finished long episode with no human editing. It does not claim that Vidu, Kling, Hailuo, PixVerse, Dreamina, or any other model is best overall. Re-run the evaluation when a model version, plan, or region changes.
