Moonshot AI presents Kimi K3 as an open model with 2.8 trillion parameters, a 1-million-token context window, native image/video/document understanding, and a design using Kimi Delta Attention and Attention Residuals. The official product page describes long-horizon coding, knowledge work and reasoning, plus generated games, presentations and research reports. Who may benefit—and who should wait
Kimi K3 is most relevant to technically capable teams that need long-context analysis, multimodal inputs or complex code-and-document work and can evaluate outputs against their own requirements. It is a less obvious fit for buyers who need a clearly documented production SLA, independently validated benchmark results, a confirmed API entitlement, or a permissive commercial license without additional review. A 1M context window is a maximum specification, not a guarantee that every product surface, account or task uses that full capacity.
Decision checklist and limitations
Before adopting it, identify which Kimi surface exposes K3, check the current model card and license, confirm context limits and regional access, and run a small evaluation on representative tasks. Do not infer that “open model” means weights are freely downloadable or unrestricted for commercial use; verify the linked distribution and license terms first. Compare model availability and hosting with Qwen and Hugging Face. A 2.8T total-parameter figure does not mean every token activates the full model or that serving is inexpensive.
