DeepSeek V4.1 Flash-1017 vs. Qwen3.8: Model Routes and Deployment Fit

Editorial update — November 1, 2026: The previous DeepSeek-versus-Qwen comparison needs an exact model frame. DeepSeek says its V4.1 Flash model has been updated to V4.1-Flash-1017 across its website, app, and API. The Qwen team’s official Qwen3.8 repository identifies Qwen3.8 as its latest open model series. This comparison summarizes provider documentation; we have not run a matched evaluation.

Do not compare brand names as if each were one endpoint

DeepSeek’s October 17 release note describes V4.1-Flash-1017 as the current update, with the website, app, and API using the new version. Its model-list documentation currently exposes the API identifier deepseek-flash and returns metadata about supported modalities, context, output limits, reasoning levels, and protocol capabilities. The previous version-specific API names may be compatibility routes, so developers should verify the current identifier in the live model list and release notes before deployment.

The Qwen team describes Qwen3.8 as an open model series and points readers from the official repository to its release artifacts and model hosts. Qwen’s repository describes improvements to coding, professional work, research, and long-horizon agents. Those descriptions and any associated benchmarks are provider statements; a repository release does not prove that every hosted endpoint, quantization, or third-party deployment behaves identically.

Decision table

Need First route to evaluate Why it may fit Confirm before choosing
Documented hosted API with a current model alias DeepSeek V4.1 Flash-1017 through the documented API route DeepSeek lists the current model ID and machine-readable capability metadata. Live model ID, modality support, context/output limits, protocol behavior, and current terms.
Model artifacts for evaluation or a controlled deployment experiment Qwen3.8 official repository and linked release artifacts The Qwen team publishes an official model-series repository and points to official distribution locations. Exact checkpoint, license, hardware/runtime needs, provenance, and whether a chosen host serves that artifact.
Multimodal API input or agent integration Compare supported capabilities on the exact endpoint DeepSeek publishes API metadata; Qwen release documentation describes its own model families. Image/document support, tools, protocol translation, and current client compatibility.

A practical evaluation checklist

  1. Choose one task and record whether it is hosted inference, an API integration, or a self-managed model experiment.
  2. For DeepSeek, query the live model list and record the API model identifier; do not assume a retired alias names a separate active model.
  3. For Qwen, record the official repository, exact checkpoint, variant, and license before downloading or deploying anything.
  4. Use the same non-sensitive task and acceptance criteria, then validate outputs against original documents or tests.
  5. Track operational work—setup, integration, review, and failure recovery—only from your own evaluation; we provide no cost or performance benchmark here.

Audience, limitations, and our assessment

DeepSeek is a reasonable first candidate when the team wants a provider-managed API route and values documented model identifiers and protocol metadata. Qwen is a reasonable first candidate for teams that want to inspect a model release path and evaluate deployment options. These are route-fit recommendations, not a universal ranking.

Limitations: a hosted API and an open-model repository are different deployment choices, not like-for-like products. Availability, variants, license terms, hosting behavior, and interface features can change. We have not verified a Qwen checkpoint, tested either model, independently reproduced provider benchmarks, or reviewed security and data-handling terms. Do not infer that “open model” means unrestricted commercial use; verify the exact artifact and license.

For a controlled project, start by deciding whether you need a provider-operated endpoint or an artifact that your team will host. Then document the selected model version, serving environment, retention settings, and the person responsible for validating output. If a third-party gateway or local quantization is involved, treat it as a separate configuration; the model maker’s documentation alone cannot confirm how another host handles requests or changes the weights.
